Detroit City of Hope
Welcome

Dear Friends:

Gunshots and violence, vacant lots and gutted buildings - the images are not new. This summer we expect to see more of them than ever as the media focuses on the 40th anniversary of the 1967 rebellions and the ongoing reverberations throughout the city of Detroit. The news will again be filled with messages of hopelessness, loss and despair, images of burned out buildings and vacant store fronts.

We have faced great loss in this city and there is much to grieve. However, we also know that Detroit is full of people like yourself, finding hope and possibilities in others who are also seeking and creating solutions to the ills that have kept our communities in cycles of broken
down everything.

That is why we are using the anniversary of the rebellion to create the Detroit: City of Hope campaign to link our efforts.

The City of Hope campaign will kick off with TRANSFORMING GRIEF INTO HOPE, an event and gathering at the Joseph Walker Williams Recreation Center on April 21, 2007 from 3:30-6:00 pm. The Williams Center is in the heart of the neighborhood that was at the epicenter of the rebellion.

Together we will share an afternoon of art and music, food and fellowship and participate in a memorial service for those whose lives and deaths have inspired and deepened our commitment to change. We hope that you and/or your organization will want to endorse and join in this event. If you do, your group's name will be included on posters, our website (www.detroit-city-of-hope.org) and other promotional materials, you will be asked to help promote the event and the Detroit: City of Hope campaign (e.g. to distribute flyers and make announcements at meetings or over e-mail lists), and invited to share your work with other participants at the event. To endorse, please send your organization's name and contact information (a contact person, e-mail address and/or phone number) to

kayvee2262@gmail.com

If your organization has a logo or graphic you would like included in the promotional materials (space permitting), please include a copy in or as an attachment to your e-mail.
